Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor has unveiled the MG4, its first mass-produced electric car with a semi-solid-state battery. Available in four different versions, the MG4 has a striking starting price of $10,100. This figure is approximately 47% lower than the launch price of the previous MG4 generation. The highest-end version can go up to $14,400.

The real highlight of the MG4 is the special model featuring semi-solid-state battery technology, scheduled for delivery by the end of the year. Pricing and technical details for this model will be announced in September. However, among the already unveiled versions, the “Smart” model promises a range of 530 kilometers with its 53.9 kWh battery. The other three versions—Comfort, Ease, and Freedom—offer a range of 437 kilometers with a 42.8 kWh battery.

Semi-solid-state battery technology is considered a revolutionary innovation in the industry. This system, developed by SAIC, not only increases energy density but also offers significant advantages over existing battery technologies in areas such as safety, cold weather performance, and longevity. The new MG4 holds a special place in automotive history as the first mass-produced example of this battery.

The interior features a high-tech transformation. The MG4 is equipped with a 15.6-inch touchscreen with 2.5K resolution. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155 processor, the system features the MG×Oppo Smart Mobility System, developed in collaboration with Oppo. This system offers numerous features, including a digital key, AI-powered voice commands, app mirroring, and integration with different phone brands.

The performance figures are also noteworthy. The MG4 generates 120 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque from its permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The maximum speed is announced as 160 km/h, while energy consumption is only 10.4 kWh per 100 kilometers. With fast charging support, reaching from 30% to 80% battery life takes just 20 minutes. Thanks to the heat pump-based thermal management system, 75% of the battery life can be maintained even after preheating at -7°C ambient temperature.

The new MG4’s dimensions have also been increased compared to the previous generation. The car measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height. The 2,750 mm wheelbase has improved interior comfort. The exterior design features an LED-illuminated MG logo, arrow-shaped LED taillights, and six different color options. Wheels are available in sizes ranging from 16 to 17 inches.

Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology stands out for its safety and structural durability. The battery is integrated with the body, ensuring both more efficient use of interior space and increased chassis rigidity. The battery system, certified IP67 and IP69K waterproof, has successfully passed rigorous testing, and SAIC offers a lifetime warranty on the engine and powertrain.

The interior prioritizes comfort. Standard features include synthetic leather upholstery, 30 different storage compartments, heated and ventilated front seats, rear seats that fold down to 27 degrees, and a panoramic glass roof with power curtain.

Further features include a transparent chassis camera, blind spot assist with rain and night vision, and a heated steering wheel. Luggage capacity is 471 liters, supplemented by a 98-liter hidden compartment.

With its price-performance ratio, advanced technological infrastructure, and pioneering battery technology, the MG4 is becoming a remarkable option in the electric car market. The technical details of the semi-solid-state battery version, to be unveiled in September, will represent a significant milestone for both the Chinese market and the global automotive industry.
