Superman, the first installment of the new DC Cinematic Universe spearheaded by James Gunn, was released on July 10th. The film opened strongly at the box office and received positive reviews from both audiences and critics.
A new Superman film is on the horizon
Warner Bros. expects the film to gross between $600 and $650 million worldwide. This development has made it clear that the studio is accelerating its efforts on DC projects, and that a new film featuring Superman is in the works.
James Gunn answered questions about his future plans at an event this week. He explained, “Promotional work for Peacemaker, then writing the sequel.” When asked, “When will you talk about a sequel to Superman?”, he replied, “I just did.” This brief exchange revealed that the project in progress is directly related to Superman.
However, this new film will not be Superman 2, as expected. James Gunn stated on social media that the sequel will not be a direct sequel to Superman, but rather a distinct DC film centered around the character. This means the story will continue within the universe, but this process will not take place in a sequel format defined by the traditional numbering system.
This approach was previously adopted by Zack Snyder. 2013’s Man of Steel wasn’t directly followed by Man of Steel 2; instead, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which featured Superman facing off against Batman, was produced. However, this isn’t exactly the path Gunn will take with the project. Gunn has explicitly stated that the film, which is currently in development, will not be a Batman v. Superman film.
Details such as the film’s title, plot, or which characters will accompany Superman have not yet been released. However, it has been confirmed that James Gunn is personally overseeing the process and has entered the scripting phase. In this new era of the DC Universe, the Superman character continues to be central not only in his own solo stories but also within various structures.
