A portable PlayStation 6 is coming

Technical details of Sony’s new portable console, the PlayStation 6, have emerged. Leaked information suggests the device will even outperform the current PlayStation 5 in some scenarios. The new console is said to come with TSMC’s Canis APU chip, manufactured on a 3nm process.

This chip features four Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6 Low Power cores for lower-power tasks like running the operating system. The GPU features a 16-CU RDNA 5 GPU, clocked at around 1.20 GHz in portable mode and 1.65 GHz when docked.

The leak also reveals that the device will support up to 48 GB of RAM with a 192-bit LPDDR5X-8533 memory controller. MicroSD and M.2 slots are available for storage. The console also features a touchscreen, dual microphones, and haptic vibration. Thanks to backward compatibility, it will be possible to play both PS5 and PS4 games.

The console’s performance in rasterization (rendering) in docked mode is around 55% to 75% of that of the PlayStation 5. However, the situation is different when it comes to ray tracing.

The new device is reportedly capable of surpassing the PS5 by 30% to 160% in this area, and even approaching the PS5 Pro. This high performance will reportedly be achieved primarily through FSR 4.0 support, and performance will be reduced in unsupported games.

The PlayStation Portable is expected to launch with a price tag between $399 and $499. Sony is also known to typically release new consoles below cost. Analysts predict a release date of 2027. This raises the possibility that the PlayStation 6 and the portable model could be released around the same time.
