Apple appears to be reassessing its mixed reality (XR) strategy. Accordingly, recent reports have revealed that the launch of the affordable Apple Vision Pro model has been postponed to 2027. This comes after the disappointing Vision Pro, which was launched to great fanfare earlier this year but failed to gain widespread attention.
Affordable Apple Vision Pro postponed to 2027
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant will now release the M5-powered and lighter Vision Pro 2 in 2025. The release of the cheaper glasses, which aim to bring mixed reality to the masses, has been postponed indefinitely.
The Vision Pro’s $3,500 price and lack of apps have limited the device to a niche audience for now. One company’s statistics show that the number of new apps for the Vision Pro has dropped sharply since launch.
On the other hand, Apple is said to be reconsidering its plans in response to the Vision Pro’s poor performance. Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman claimed that Apple is working on an ‘iPhone-connected’ pair of glasses that transfers intensive operations to the user’s smartphone. This low-cost accessory could help catch up with the entry-level market.
However, similar products from Android manufacturers such as XReal have yet to gain widespread popularity due to lack of usability. It remains to be seen whether Apple can overcome the challenges that are weighing down consumer demand, such as price, app selection, and user experience.
