According to the latest tweet from the official Age of Empires account, a new expansion pack called Rome Campaign is coming for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. But when will this new version be available for sale? Here’s the release date for Return of Rome…
Release date for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Return of Rome is May 16!
The remastered version of Age of Empires II was released in late 2019, followed by annual DLCs such as Lords of the West (January 2021), Dawn of the Dukes (August 2021), and Dynasties of India (April 2022), all of which received numerous expansion packs.
Last year, the Dynasties of India version saw a significant amount of content added in the form of three new civilizations – Dravidians, Gurjaras, and Baburs – which were all included in the base game. Additionally, all Indian civilizations in the game were renamed as “Hindustanis.”
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Return of Rome isn’t actually new as it was briefly announced during a live broadcast celebrating the 25th anniversary of the AoE game series on October 25, 2022. However, the release date for Return of Rome was just announced today as May 16, which is earlier than expected.
As for its content, details are still scarce, but it is speculated that it will include all 16 original civilizations. The name Return of Rome could have been intentionally chosen to refer to the expansion pack “The Rise of Rome” offered for the first game in the Age of Empires series.
