Sony is starting a new era for users in the United Kingdom and Ireland in order to increase security on the PlayStation platform. The company is preparing to make age verification mandatory for access to certain social and interactive features.
Although this new policy is not a general requirement covering all users, those who want to use basic communication tools will need to verify their identities. These rules, which will come into effect as of June 2026, will directly affect the way players interact on the platform.
Approval Will Be Required to Access Social Features
Access to features such as voice chat, group creation, and text messaging will not be possible without completing the age verification process.
In addition, players using third-party applications such as Discord via PlayStation will also need to complete this process.
In-game communication tools and the sharing of content created by users are also included within the restrictions. Sony is taking these steps to comply with laws aimed at protecting children and youth from inappropriate content on the internet.
Although the official implementation date will be the summer of 2026, the system has already started warning some users to perform verification. Many countries and states had started to implement similar restrictions as of 2025.
Other Examples in the Sector and Privacy Debates
Popular platforms such as Discord and Roblox had also put similar age verification systems into effect in the past period. However, such applications bring along serious debates regarding the privacy of user data and the protection of anonymity.
Some platforms had to take a step back in their initially strict plans due to user reactions and data security concerns. How Sony will protect user data in this process and how effective the system will be is a matter of curiosity.
This trend spreading across the sector brings the balance between security and privacy in the digital world back to the agenda. Do you think performing identity and age verification on gaming platforms is the right method to increase security?
