Apple will make a significant upgrade to its Mac lineup later this year with the launch of the M4 family, according to a new report. Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman said Apple is nearing the end of production of the first M4 chips, which will include at least three models.
Apple to unlock artificial intelligence in Mac family with M4
Apple is reportedly planning to update every Mac model with the new M4 family over the next two years. The transition is expected to begin later this year with the refreshed iMac, 14-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini. The higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro is also expected to be refreshed with the M4.
In 2025, there will be updates for the MacBook Air, Mac Studio and a new Mac Pro desktop computer. All these models are expected to be powered by the M4 series.
The M4 series will allegedly consist of an entry-level chip as well as two high-performance options. Apple also reportedly wants to showcase advanced artificial intelligence capabilities integrated into the macOS update with the M4.
The entry-level M4, codenamed “Donan”, will power the relatively cheaper MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini. The high-end “Brava” chip is designed for Mac Studio and professional-grade laptops/desktops.
Apple is also developing the “Hidra” M4 chip to power the Mac Pro with up to 512 GB of RAM.
