Amazon: Artificial intelligence and robots to reduce workforce

Ana sayfa / News

Amazon has unveiled its new cost-cutting robots. The company argues that this development shouldn’t be portrayed as “robots taking over jobs.” However, the new systems demonstrate that fewer people may be needed in Amazon’s warehouses. The new robot, specifically named “Blue Jay,” was promoted as an “extra pair of hands” for employees. This has rekindled discussions about the impact of automation on the human workforce.

A recent report published by foreign media shed light on this issue. The report, citing internal Amazon documents, stated that automation could help increase sales without hiring more staff. Amazon, in response, released a more positive statement highlighting its robotics and delivery technologies. The announcement also mentioned technologies such as AI-connected augmented reality glasses and VR training for drivers.

Among the 10 different robots Amazon has introduced, Blue Jay stands out. Blue Jay has the capacity to carry 75% of products in warehouses. The company aims for this robot to be a key technology for Same-Day Delivery operations. Blue Jay was developed in just over a year using artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies. Picking, placing, and assembling operations, previously performed by three separate robot stations, can now be performed in a single workspace. Its AI system, dubbed “Project Eluna,” is also being promoted as a “teammate” that reduces employee cognitive load.

Amazon Robotics Chief Technology Officer Tye Brady said in a statement, “The headline isn’t about robots. It’s about people and the future of work we’re building together.” In response to the New York Times report, the company reiterated that it has been the largest employer in the US over the past decade and plans to hire 250,000 people for the holiday season.

Meanwhile, a June letter from CEO Andy Jassy to employees clarifies the situation. Jassy stated that productivity gains will be achieved through generative AI. He stated that this means “fewer people will do some jobs done today, but more people will do other types of jobs.” Jassy added that they expect a reduction in the corporate workforce over the next few years due to the use of artificial intelligence.

The published report also points to Jassy’s efficiency goal. According to the report, warehouses are being restructured to reduce e-commerce costs. The new facilities are being designed to process more products with fewer employees. It is anticipated that the remaining employees in these warehouses will increasingly focus on maintaining the robots.

Amazon’s automation efforts, while aimed at increasing efficiency, also raise concerns about the future of employment. While the company emphasizes a “human-centric” future, it is clear that the role of technology will increase. So, what are your thoughts on these new robotic technologies from Amazon? Do you have any concerns about the impact of automation on the workforce?
