Android 14, which Google is expected to officially launch later this year, will include support for improved satellite connectivity. The new connectivity option, which will initially be available on Pixel phones, will allow users to send text messages over satellite networks when outside of cellular coverage.
Pixel 8 series can send SMS via satellite with Android 14
New satellite SMS support has surfaced on Twitter, suggesting that Android 14 will be a first. While not confirmed by Google, the feature appears to be part of a push by other manufacturers to provide satellite access in emergencies.
Apple first introduced satellite SOS support last year with the iPhone 14 series. The feature allows users to connect to satellites and emergency services when they are in danger and out of cellular range. Similarly, Huawei has enabled satellite-based SOS support on its Mate 60 and P60 models.
Satellite connectivity in Android 14 will likely play a similar role. However, it has also been stated that Google will enable SMS in addition to SOS support.
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro models, which are expected to be released around October, will likely include the satellite feature. The flagship is also expected to feature a 6.7-inch QHD+ 120 Hz LTPO OLED display, Tensor G3 chipset, 12 GB of RAM and 128/256 GB of storage.
While Apple was the first to bring satellite connectivity to the market, many Android brands have already adopted the feature. Bringing this life-saving feature to more smartphones is a very important development.
