Android 16 returns the quick settings to its roots
Google plans to make significant changes to the quick settings panel with Android 16. One of these changes will be the return of the expandable internet and Bluetooth boxes, allowing direct access as it did in the past.
In versions between Android Lollipop and Oreo, users could tap on the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth icon, and it would expand to show the available networks or connected devices. However, with Android 15, tapping these icons only opens a detailed pop-up window. Google plans to bring back the old system with Android 16.
Not only will Google bring back an old feature with Android 16, but they will also completely overhaul the quick settings panel. The changes include:
- More flexible layout: The size of the quick settings boxes will be adjustable, and they can be reduced to a 1×1 size.
- More shortcuts: It will be possible to display 16 different shortcuts on the same page, compared to the previous 2×1 layout.
- Design changes: Google aims to make the new design more user-friendly and accessible.
It is not certain whether Android 16 will include these changes. While Google plans to release the update in the second quarter of the year, it is unclear whether there will be enough time for such a large revision. If not, the revamped quick settings panel could appear in later Android 16 versions or Android 17.
