Angry Video Game Nerd brings 8-bit chaos to PS5 and PS4 this October

The Angry Video Game Nerd is heading back to his pixelated roots this time on modern consoles.

YouTube icon James Rolfe is once again donning the glasses, with a new Angry Video Game Nerd game launching on October 23. And while the 8-bit madness is being printed on real NES cartridges thanks to Limited Run Games, those without retro hardware aren’t being left out.

PS5 and PS4 players will get their own versions, complete with FMV cutscenes starring Rolfe himself. If you’ve ever wanted to play an episode of AVGN, this might be the closest thing yet.

Star Wars Outlaws hits rough terrain on Switch 2, early demo shows

Star Wars Outlaws hits Switch 2 this week, but early PAX West impressions show shaky performance and visual downgrades.

The trailer promises side-scrolling carnage pulled straight from the AVGN universe. Enemies, power-ups, and level design all channel the same energy as Rolfe’s rants, complete with absurd bosses and alternate routes.

According to the official description, players can expect:

The FMV sequences aren’t just cameos, either. They’re built into the flow of the game, aiming to blur the line between gameplay and Nerd episode.

The title is being handled by Mega Cat Studios, a team with retro chops and a few rumors swirling around them. Most notably, they’re reportedly involved in an unannounced Metroidvania project tied to God of War, though that’s yet to be confirmed.

Either way, their history with pixel-perfect design puts this latest Angry Video Game Nerd release in safe hands.

What makes this outing different is the commitment to era-appropriate nonsense. From sprites to sound effects, the presentation is a love letter to old-school gaming with a hefty dash of Nerd rage.

Throw in a few FMVs, some toilet humor, and a literal cartridge edition, and you’ve got a fan package worth more than a few broken controllers.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just looking for another retro-inspired platformer, Angry Video Game Nerd on PS5 and PS4 promises chaotic fun with no apologies. It’s crude, it’s loud and it’s exactly what you’d expect from the Nerd.
