Apple introduced a tracking device called AirTag in 2021. This tracker, which is slightly larger than a watch battery, pairs with the iCloud account of the owner and registers to the Find My network. The device can work with all iPhones and iPadOS over iOS 14.5, but the device requires the U1 chip that iPhone 11 and later devices have in order to use the exact location finding feature. Recently, a woman from the US state of Southern California caught cargo thieves with AirTag.
AirTag catches cargo thieves
A woman living in the US state of Southern California applied to the police with a complaint that several cargoes belonging to her were stolen from the mailbox at the Los Alamos post office. The Southern California woman, who wanted to find the criminals who could not be caught, took action herself this time and mailed the package containing an AirTag paired with her iPhone to the mailbox. After the thieves stole other people’s packages, including packages with AirTags, the woman tracked the criminals via AirTag.
Finally, the woman who determined the location of the thieves 26 kilometres away from the post office informed the police teams. Police teams caught the thieves with their operation. The operation in which the thieves were caught was found in packages belonging to others worth approximately 46 thousand dollars, including AirTag. It turned out that these thieves also had offences such as fraud, credit card theft and identity theft. A 27-year-old female thief from Santa Maria and a 37-year-old man from Riverside were arrested. In their information, the police stated that the woman from Southern California wanted to keep her identity confidential.
This is not the first time AirTag has been a hero. In recent months, a person named Philip Obando realised that his BMW was stolen from in front of his house. Obando hid an AirTag inside his car, thinking that theft incidents could happen. Obando, who saw the thief’s face by controlling his vehicle remotely and scared him by honking his horn, finally got his vehicle from Apple’s find application and got his vehicle back. Personal items such as the wallet that fell in the car caused the thief to be caught.
