The 2024 Academy Awards took place the other day. While the productions of many digital streaming giants competed, it was noteworthy that Netflix and Apple returned empty-handed from the Oscars. This also revealed the Hollywood world’s hesitation to embrace digital platforms.
Netflix only won one Oscar award
Despite receiving 19 nominations for its films, Netflix ended the night with just one win. Wes Anderson’s live-action film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar took home the Oscar for Best Short Film.
Bradley Cooper’s widely acclaimed film Maestro led Netflix’s losses, failing to win any of its seven nominations. Similar scenarios happened with Rustin, Nyad and Society of the Snow.
But the clear loser of the night was Apple TV+ specials. None of Apple’s projects managed to win an Oscar. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon received more than $400 million, but no awards.
The tech giant won best picture in 2022 for CODA. That means Apple hasn’t won an Oscar in two years.
At the Oscars last night, Oppenheimer was named best picture. Christopher Nolan also won the best director award.
