Apple, with its newly introduced Vision Pro, has merged the real world with a virtual world. Simply put, we can say that the computerized goggles we have seen in science fiction movies have become a reality thanks to Apple. However, since this virtual headset is a personalized product, certain security measures need to be taken.
In terms of the privacy of your data within the Apple device, Apple has introduced a feature similar to the Face ID feature used in their phones with Vision Pro. According to this, the device will perform iris scanning in order for you to unlock and use the product. In other words, your eyes will serve as the device’s lock screen password. However, this feature is not actually new. It was introduced 8 years ago.
The feature was initially introduced by Fujitsu in 2015. In the following days, iris scanning made its way into phones with the Microsoft Lumia 950. Later on, Samsung picked up on this trend and incorporated it into many of its flagship phones. Iris scanning started to become popular with Samsung. At a time when fingerprint locks were just starting to be integrated into phones, iris scanning was revolutionary.
The only drawback of this feature was that it was slow due to its novelty. As a result, it received a lot of heavy criticism. Users stopped using the feature because a solution to this problem could not be found. Samsung used this feature in its flagship models, the S8 and S9, but discontinued iris scanning with the S10 in 2019.
Although the iris scanner was seen as an unsuccessful venture during this period, today Apple introduced its own iris scanner. Apple could have introduced this feature to iPhones back then. However, the brand may not have wanted to introduce the product without achieving the desired quality. Looking at the 8-year period that has passed, we can say that iris scanners have the potential to work comprehensively. We will see this with Vision Pro.
