Apple has ended the development of its long-rumored electric vehicle. According to information from sources close to the company, the resources of the project, which has been going on for years, have been shifted to different initiatives. This move marks the end of Apple’s “Apple Car” effort, which has been going on for more than a decade.
Apple Car team disbanded
According to the news in Bloomberg, Apple Operations Director Jeff Williams told the team of 2 thousand employees that the Apple Car project was canceled. It was stated that the engineers and design team involved in the work will be taken to different projects.
Many project team members will be transferred to Apple’s artificial intelligence division to work on productive artificial intelligence under the leadership of John Giannandrea. However, a number of hardware engineers and car designers will face layoffs as their roles are eliminated.
It was known years ago that Apple wanted to develop a self-driving electric car with highly advanced autonomous technology. In recent years, however, the company has scaled back its ambitions, aiming for a classic electric vehicle with partial autonomous functions.
The project, called Apple Car, was expected to be launched in 2026 to compete with Tesla. However, recent executive losses seem to have cost the company dearly. It struggled to maintain the vision in more than a decade of R&D spending.
Musk was not silent about this news either. In his post on X, he shared emojis showing that he was “sad” for Apple Car.
