CarPlay Opens Up to Third-Party AI Integration
Information shared by a Bloomberg analyst suggests that Apple will open its Apple CarPlay platform to third-party artificial intelligence applications with an upcoming iOS update. This move marks a significant shift from the current strict rules, which only permit apps in categories like navigation, music, and communication. Consequently, the new policy will allow voice-focused AI assistants to be included in the system.
This development aims to enhance driver safety by providing a seamless, voice-activated alternative to handling a smartphone while driving. By integrating these powerful AI tools directly into the car’s infotainment system, drivers can access information and perform tasks without taking their eyes off the road.
Siri Remains the Primary Assistant
While Apple is embracing third-party AI, it is also taking steps to protect its native assistant, Siri. Instead, to interact with ChatGPT or Gemini, the driver will need to manually launch the respective application from the CarPlay screen.
