Apple is set to unveil its new iPhone 15 series in September, but it has emerged that some devices will not receive the iOS 17 update. However, the company is reportedly planning an unexpected move for older iPhone models.
Apple is cutting off support for iPhone 5S and older models!
According to sources who have accurately leaked information in the past, Apple will effectively render a number of older iPhone models useless with an update from May 2023. This will be done by cutting off internet access for several key online services, including the App Store, Maps and Siri.
For example, devices such as the iPhone 5S, which can only run up to iOS 11, will lose support for all Apple apps except for iCloud. As a result, users will be unable to download apps or use Maps, and given that there are only a handful of third-party developers developing apps for these devices, they will essentially become obsolete.
When Apple releases a new operating system, it usually excludes some older models, but it usually ensures that the devices can still receive the previous version of the software. This time, however, it appears that Apple has decided to retire the older iPhone models, effectively consigning them to the history books or recycling bins.
The iPhone 5S will be the most recent device affected by this move, but its release date was in 2013, meaning that the number of people using an iPhone 10 years or older is already very low. However, some companies are known to still actively use these older devices, and if they continue to do so, they may need to develop their own software.
