Apple fans have claimed it! iPod games won’t disappear

Ana sayfa / News

Some of us may remember the once popular iPod Clickwheel games. Those games, which left their mark on an era, have been revived thanks to a group of passionate fans who want to make them unforgettable. The games on Apple’s classic iPod devices left their mark on many users despite their short-lived golden age. Today, to immortalize those old games, the iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project has launched a new rescue movement.

First of all, the preservation movement has been met with great interest by those who believe that iPod games were once an indispensable pastime and offer a legacy worth preserving. The project began when an iPod fan, Quix, discovered a way to bypass DRM protection and copy games from an iTunes backup to another computer.

Quix protected 19 iPod games from his own library using this method. He then collaborated with Olsro, whom he met on Discord, to expand the project even further. Olsro created a “community virtual machine” using the Qemu emulator.

This virtual machine allows users to securely back up licensed iPod games. So far, the project has been a great success: 42 of the 54 games have been preserved. These games were once the most popular titles of their time, classics sold for $7.49 on the iTunes Store by gaming giants such as EA, Sega, Square Enix and others.

However, Apple stopped selling these games in 2011. However, game owners can still install existing games on their old devices. But Olsro, who leads the project, warned of the possibility of Apple shutting down the existing license servers and urged more fans to support the project.

If these servers are shut down, games that are not backed up will be irretrievably lost. For this reason, Olsro called on other iPod users to step up and contribute to the digital archiving effort.

In short, the “iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project” may seem like the efforts of a group of nostalgic gamers, but it is actually a big step towards preserving digital culture. Thanks to the project, the games that marked an era will be carried to future generations as an unforgettable legacy.
