To promote its own applications, Apple has created a website titled ‘Apps by Apple,’ which highlights the applications developed by Apple for its products such as iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple TV. Apple has a good reason for this move. Thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) of the EU, it will be allowed to install applications from external sources on iPhones in 27 European Union (EU) countries.
What is the purpose of Apps by Apple?
With the new site, Apple plans to showcase all its self-developed applications in one place. To avoid any confusion, the applications are categorized. Apple’s stance here is to imprint its application slogans in users’ minds and convey the message that “the alternative to the app you’re downloading is already with us,” in contrast to the possibility of third-party app downloads on iPhones.
Apple has categorized its applications on the ‘Apps by Apple’ website into six main categories:
- Communication: “Apps to keep you connected.” This category includes Phone, Messages, FaceTime, Mail, and Contacts.
- Creativity: “Tools for professionals and passionate creators.” This category encompasses applications like Photos, Camera, GarageBand, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro for iPad.
- Productivity: “All you need to create a work of art.” Applications in this category include Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Freeform, and Pages.”
- Discovery: “Explore the world and navigate it effortlessly.” Applications in this category include Safari, Maps, Weather, Find My, and Wallet.
- Entertainment and Home: “Great ways to watch, read, listen, and relax.” This category includes applications like Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple Music Classical, and Podcasts.
- Health and Fitness: “Healthy living for your mind and body.” Applications in this category encompass Apple Health, Fitness, Workout, Sleep, and Cycle Tracking.
- Features: “Built-in, seamless, and easy to use.” This category covers Siri, iCloud, CarPlay, Continuity, and Family Sharing.”
Apple states, “Every Apple app comes with robust privacy features to help protect your data and give you control over your information.” “In the App Store, there are millions of apps that offer great experiences, and each of them complies with Apple’s privacy, security, and content standards.”
From these statements, we can understand that Apple opposes the European Union’s decision to allow third-party app installations and does not want these apps to be installed. Therefore, they aim to promote their own apps more effectively and encourage users to continue downloading apps from the App Store.
