Apple completed a comprehensive cleanup of its product lineup by the end of 2025, discontinuing a total of 25 different products. The most notable item on this year’s list was the third-generation iPhone SE, which was completely phased out with the release of the iPhone 16e in February.
Apple bids farewell to many devices
This move symbolizes the end of an era in Apple’s history; as the brand’s official sales list no longer includes any smartphones with a home button, Touch ID, LCD screens, or panel sizes smaller than 6 inches.
The company also decided to phase out the iPhone Plus series, ceasing sales of the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 Plus models. The Plus series has been replaced by the iPhone Air, which boasts a much thinner body. With the arrival of the iPhone 17 series, changes also occurred on the flagship side, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models were retired, giving way to their successors.
For the iPad, 2025 was a period where hardware updates took center stage rather than design revolutions. The M4-powered iPad Pro was replaced by the M5 version, while the M2-powered iPad Air was replaced by an M3-supported model.
The entry-level 10th-generation iPad was updated with the A16 chip, effectively discontinuing its older version. A similar situation occurred in the Mac world; the M2 Max and M2 Ultra-powered Mac Studio was replaced by the M4 Max and M3 Ultra options, while the MacBook Air family completely switched to the M4 architecture.
The discontinuation of the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air, in particular, fully aligned the MacBook Air series with modern processor standards. The rapid replacement of the 14-inch M4 model with the new M5-powered version on the MacBook Pro front demonstrates how quickly Apple accelerated its hardware cycle.
In the accessories and peripherals sector, the change in technological standards was decisive. The AirPods Pro 2 was replaced by third-generation headphones, while the first M2-powered version of the Apple Vision Pro was replaced by a more powerful M5-powered revision.
In terms of charging technologies, new MagSafe units with Qi 2.2 support replace older models, while the 30W USB-C power adapter has been replaced by a new 40W dynamic adapter.
Furthermore, components remnants of the Lightning era, such as the Lightning to 3.5mm audio cable and the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 converter, have been completely removed from Apple Store shelves. This widespread product discontinuation is seen as the ultimate result of Apple’s strategy to consolidate its entire ecosystem around USB-C and the latest silicon processor architecture.
