Apple has announced the new version 2.0 of Final Cut Camera, its app that maximizes the iPhone’s camera capabilities for professional filmmakers, content creators, and journalists. This new version, available for free from the App Store, stands out with its groundbreaking features, particularly for the new iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 expands upon the app’s core features, allowing for manual adjustments to video recordings. Now, users have access to settings like white balance and manual focus like a professional camera. Among the app’s most significant innovations is ProRes RAW and genlock support, introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

With these innovations, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max become the first smartphones capable of recording ProRes RAW video. This format allows for recording RAW data directly from the camera sensor, providing maximum flexibility for color correction and other adjustments during editing.

Additionally, open gate technology has been introduced, allowing editors to capture a wider field of view at resolutions higher than DCI 4K using the entire sensor. This allows them to reframe, stabilize, and adjust the final aspect ratio without compromising image quality.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 also introduces genlock support, a crucial feature for professional multi-camera setups. This feature allows the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max to sync to the same reference signal as other recording devices, ensuring every frame is perfectly synced.

This eliminates the need for hours of manual alignment. Genlock support has also been opened to third-party developers and is now available in new products like the Blackmagic Design Camera ProDock.

New manual settings have also been added to Apple’s Center Stage front camera, which comes with the new iPhone 17 family. Now users can shoot horizontally or vertically without rotating the iPhone. The new Center Stage front camera boasts a wider field of view and higher resolution, making it the largest and first-ever square front camera sensor on an iPhone.

Furthermore, Final Cut Camera 2.0 provides access to precise settings such as white balance, shutter speed, and ISO for video recordings. Other new features in the app include Apple Log 2 support. This feature allows iPhone 17 Pro users to shoot with a wider color gamut in ProRes or HEVC. During editing, the Log 2 LUT implemented in Final Cut Pro restores footage to the vividness of the original scene.

The app also supports enabling Timecode with options such as Time of Day, Recording Run, or external timecode for precise recording identification during editing. Using the new 200mm Telephoto camera on the iPhone 17 Pro, it is now possible to shoot video with ProRes at up to 4K resolution and 60 fps.

Final Cut Camera 2.0 will be available for free from the App Store this month. The app works on iOS 18.6 and above on iPhone Xs and newer models, while some features require iOS 26 and iPhone 17 Pro.
