Apple analyst Mark Gurman reported that the company is working on an assistant independent of Siri. Accordingly, this assistant will target Apple’s upcoming robotic devices and will be a humanoid AI personality.
Apple rolls up its sleeves for robotic assistant
According to Gurman, the new virtual assistant is being developed using generative AI technologies for more natural conversational ability compared to Siri. It will enable more advanced interactions through devices with advanced sensors and gestures.
Siri will continue to be Apple’s digital assistant on products such as iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and HomePod. But the new AI is thought to be the brains of Apple’s first robots. Gurman stated that Apple aims to launch its first robot in the next 5 years.
Creating an assistant separate from Siri demonstrates Apple’s desire to develop an AI customized for different use cases. While Siri will continue to focus on voice and touch interactions, the new robotic assistant will utilize generative AI for humanoid conversations.
Research is still in the early stages. But Apple is reportedly aiming to launch its first robotic product by 2026 or 2027. Codenamed J595, it will have a large screen, cameras and a robotic base. It will also serve as a desktop product.
The company aims to offer users a more human-like interaction in its future products. The new assistant could offer users a more personal and intuitive experience, a step Apple has always wanted to take in the tech world.
