Apple has taken action to transition iPhone users to the latest operating system, and the iOS 26 update is now much more visible in the Settings menu. The company has made a strategic change to its update notifications to bring new features to users who remain on the old version.
iOS 26 update and new notification layout
The tech giant aims to increase adoption of the new operating system, which it released in September. To this end, device owners still using iOS 18 now see iOS 26.1 at the top of the Settings app as a “Recommended Update.” Previously, iOS 18 security updates, which were prioritized, have been moved to the bottom of the list.
Many users are hesitant to upgrade to the new version due to the “Liquid Glass” design language, which completely changes the interface. Despite these radical changes, Apple is increasing its push for notifications to encourage users to have the most up-to-date experience.
Apple continues to provide security patches for iOS 18 for now. However, experts warn that this support may end in the coming months, and that anyone who wants full security will eventually have to upgrade to the new version.
