New details have emerged that Apple is working on an 18.8-inch foldable device. It is also claimed that the device is being tested with Face ID technology embedded in the screen. However, it is still not clear whether this product will be iPad Pro or MacBook.
Apple has started developing a foldable model with a giant screen
Display analyst Ross Young was the first to announce that Apple was interested in a foldable display around 20 inches. Young suggested that this screen was being developed for the MacBook. Similarly, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that he found traces of a large-sized foldable screen in the supply chain and stated that it could be a MacBook model. However, in the following process, Kuo said that the screen size was revised to 18.8 inches.
At this point, there are different opinions about exactly what the device will be. If the device has a form factor consisting entirely of the screen, it seems more likely to be an iPad Pro. However, it is also known that Apple has been working on the idea of a fully touchscreen MacBook for a long time. For this to happen, Apple needs to develop satisfactory solutions to issues such as touch keyboard experience, physical key feel and touch typing ergonomics.
According to the new leak, Apple has a prototype in which it is testing screen-embedded Face ID technology. According to a source who previously leaked accurate information about the iPhone 16 Pro’s telephoto lens and larger sensor main camera, Apple’s prototype will use a metal superstructure lens to integrate Face ID into the display.
While there’s no word yet on a release date, it’s clear that the 18.8-inch foldable device is an important part of Apple’s future plans. How the company will shape the line between Mac and iPad with this new form factor will become clearer with more details in the coming periods.
