Apple has made waves in the PC market this week with new upgrades to its Mac Mini and iMac lines. But between the computers lies news of an even bigger upgrade. The company quietly unveiled its new M4 Pro chip.
Apple M4 Pro features
Apple’s new chip brings performance improvements to speed up AI and graphics operations. M4 Pro has a 14-core CPU with 10 high-performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores. The GPU structure includes 20 cores.
The M4 Pro’s support for the new Thunderbolt 5 standard provides a huge leap in graphics performance. Thunderbolt 5 offers data transfer speeds of up to 80 Gbps, double the previous generation. This allows the chip to power two 6K displays.
Apple said it made big gains in both single- and multi-core CPU performance. The 16-core neural network engine is three times faster than the M1 chip to power machine learning tasks. Memory bandwidth has also increased to 273 GB/s for faster access to large data sets.
According to the company, all this power will deliver enough performance for Apple Intelligence. Applications such as video editing, 3D modeling and AI model development will experience a significant speed boost on machines equipped with the M4 Pro. The first device to use the new processor was the Mac mini model.
