Apple Maps is now available in the browser
Through the beta.maps.apple.com website, users will now be able to access Apple Maps from their desktop or mobile browser without the need for the iOS app. The web version of Maps will allow users to get driving and walking directions, view businesses and ratings/reviews.
Users will also be able to explore cities with maps and order food for delivery. Apple said it will add new features to the web version in the coming months, including the Look Around street view feature.
For now, the web version of Maps is only available in English. It will be compatible with Safari and Chrome on Mac/iPad, as well as Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows. Apple has announced plans to expand language and browser support in the future.
Developers using Apple’s MapKit JS tool will be able to link to map content on the web. This will extend users’ access to Apple Maps beyond iOS devices.
Apple first launched its navigation app in 2012. Since it can only be accessed on Apple-based devices, the release of a web version is important. This shows that the company wants to compete with Google Maps.
