Apple today released iOS 18 beta 3, bringing additional tweaks and improvements to the mobile operating system ahead of its planned fall launch. One of the prominent changes in this release is improved support for dark mode icons across third-party apps.
What does offer iOS 18 beta 3?
The beta now automatically applies dark-themed icons to many popular apps like Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube when using Dark Mode. The icons are generated by adapting an app’s existing design to have a black background and lighter colors. This gives iOS 18 a more cohesive look in Dark Mode without requiring icon updates from every developer.
Photos app enhancements in beta 3 include a new “Select” button that is always visible atop the scrollable grid of images instead of requiring a swipe gesture. The updated design makes it easier to select multiple photos. Apple has also tweaked emoji, stickers, and Memoji in Messages by combining them into a unified interface that allows browsing and sending different expressive content types with more functionality.
Additional minor changes in the third beta include a dynamic new wallpaper option, refreshed controls for the iPhone flashlight, and updated Maps app icons for Dark Mode. Apple is also providing more context for enabling enhanced messaging via RCS in the Messages settings.
Signs of new “Apple Intelligence” features like Genmoji, Image Playground and Writing Tools were uncovered in the beta’s code by developers. The company appears to be continuing integration of AI capabilities into core iOS experiences ahead of launch.
