Apple signs deal with TSMC to produce 2nm chips for iPhone 17 Pro

Ana sayfa /

Apple has signed an agreement that will go far beyond its competitors in the smartphone industry. According to news from Taiwanese media, Apple has completely closed TSMC’s 2nm chip production capacity for the iPhone 17 Pro series. In other words, all chips to be produced in the first phase will be only produced by Apple in the world. So, what does this new 2nm chip mean, what kind of difference will we see in the iPhone 17 series? Details in our news…

First of all, even the iPhone 16 models currently on the market have made a significant leap in performance by using TSMC’s 3nm chip manufacturing technology. However, Apple continues to move forward relentlessly. It plans to integrate TSMC’s 2nm technology into the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models to be released next year.

2nm chip technology means more processing power, lower energy consumption and higher efficiency. In short, we can say that phones will run faster, heat up less and battery life will be significantly extended.

Meanwhile, Apple’s agreement with TSMC will not be limited to the iPhone 17 Pro. According to rumors, Apple plans to continue using 3nm technology for ultra-thin devices such as the iPhone 17 Air. That is, high performance will be offered even for more compact devices. However, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will be among the devices that will lead the market using 2nm technology.

TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing capacity is currently quite limited, but Apple has already pulled ahead of its competitors by completely closing that capacity, which will likely make it harder for other tech giants to access 2nm chip technology.

It is also known that companies like Intel are eyeing TSMC’s 2nm chip production capacity. It is said that they plan to use 2nm chips, especially for the Intel Nova Lake platform. However, mass production of these chips is not expected to start before 2026. In other words, we can say that Apple will be the leader in the market with 2nm chips for a few years.

Apple’s move has also accelerated TSMC’s plans to increase its 2nm production capacity. Production facilities in Taiwan are being rapidly expanded and new factories are under construction. The new factories, especially in the Hsinchu and Kaohsiung regions, will operate at full capacity in 2025 and 2026. In other words, Apple can use 2nm chip technology outside of the iPhone series.
