Apple has announced that it will be the first and largest customer of the new Amkor manufacturing facility under development in Peoria, Arizona. Amkor will produce Apple silicon made at the nearby TSMC fab, which is Apple’s largest customer.
“Apple is deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing and we will continue to expand our investments in the US,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer. Apple and Amkor have worked together for more than a decade to produce chips that are widely used in all Apple products.
With their shared desire to manufacture in America, Amkor and Apple developed plans to build the largest outsourced advanced packaging facility in America.
Amkor will invest approximately $2 billion in the project, which will create more than 2,000 jobs upon completion. Apple’s investments in advanced manufacturing are part of its 2021 commitment to invest $430 billion in the US economy over five years. Apple is on track to meet its goal through direct spending on US suppliers, data center investments, capital spending in the US, and other domestic spending.
