Rumors about Apple’s entry into the world of foldable devices have taken an unexpected turn. After a recent spate of claims, news has now emerged suggesting that the company has halted work on the foldable iPhone.
Apple halts foldable iPhone development due to durability concerns, focus shifts to foldable iPad
Just over a week ago, there were leaks that Apple was developing a prototype foldable iPhone with a clamshell that resembled Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip. However, concerns over durability and usability have led to rumors about the viability of such a device.
According to a well-known tech writer known as Fixed Focus Digital, who has a significant following on China’s Weibo platform, Apple’s decision to halt development of a foldable iPhone is due to concerns about the durability of the foldable iPhone design.
The report claims that Apple has been buying foldable phones from competitors like Samsung and conducting reverse engineering tests to assess their viability. In fact, a prototype foldable iPhone with a display supplied to Apple by Samsung allegedly ran into problems, with the display failing after several days of testing.
This has forced Apple to reassess its foldable iPhone plans and shelve a potential product for now until a more robust display solution can be found that meets the company’s strict quality standards. So foldable iPhones are not on Apple’s 2024 and 2025 roadmap. We don’t expect a foldable iPhone anytime soon.
While the fate of the foldable iPhone remains uncertain, the claim also left open the possibility of a foldable iPad. Unlike the foldable iPhone, the foldable iPad will not be subject to the same compression when carried in a bag as the same phone is when carried in a pocket. Other claims suggest that Apple is considering releasing a foldable iPad in 2027 as a successor to the 8.3-inch iPad mini.
