Following the launch of the iPhone 17 series, scratches, particularly on the rear glass and camera ports, began to become noticeable on display screens in stores. Many users noticed these marks on devices displayed in Apple Stores.
Apple: MagSafe stands are the source of the problem
Apple stated that, after conducting an investigation, the scratches were not permanent but were caused by the material transferring from worn MagSafe stands used in stores to the phone. The metal ring around these stands causes friction when the phone is lifted from the stand and can wear down over time, leaving marks.
To address the problem, the company has begun replacing worn MagSafe stands in stores. As a precaution, silicone rings have been installed on the edges of the stands in some Apple Stores.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple recently issued new instructions to store employees. Accordingly, employees have begun regularly wiping the back surfaces of display devices not only with conventional cleaning solutions but also with a special cleaner containing a salt mixture.
This method largely eliminates the marks. Users similarly report that they can try removing scratch-like marks at home by mixing a small amount of sea salt in water. Some users report that this method is more effective than water or isopropyl alcohol.
The company is trying to address this unexpected issue with the iPhone 17 series with both stand modifications and new cleaning methods. However, these solutions are not sufficient for displays that are already scratched. Apple’s steps aim to improve the in-store experience in the future.
