As September 12, 2023 approaches, the excitement of Apple fans continues to multiply. We will see new Apple products at the event tomorrow. But when it comes to accessories, we may encounter a slightly different situation. The launch cases that Apple made famous for a while may not be released again. Here are the details…
Apple wants to take greener steps with silicone-free cases
Apple has made many innovations within the scope of its environmental footprint project. The brand, which aims to make the parts used in its products such as phones and computers in production more environmentally friendly, has taken steps in this regard.
Apple, which uses more environmentally friendly and easy-to-recycle materials in new products, accelerates the recycling movement with systems such as second-hand purchase and new product sales with barter.
However, these arrangements must not have provided the desired level of environmentalism. For this reason, the technology giant decided to make a new regulation on products such as silicone cases. According to leaks, the brand plans to stop using silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer accessories and replace them with accessories made of more environmentally friendly next-generation materials.
Silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer materials are products that users buy once and throw them in the back of the drawer after using them a little bit, as they are quite affordable with the consumption frenzy around the world, as they are plastic-based and dissolve in nature quite late. Although Apple cannot prevent the consumption frenzy, it wants to follow a different role by changing the materials used in production.
Of course, this change is not limited to cases. In addition, accessories such as Apple Watch sport bands, Solo Loop and AirTag Loop are not expected to be silicone-based. But the use of plastic rubber will continue in products such as Apple Watch standard straps.
There are actually two big criticisms that Apple will receive here. The first is why “leather” is not used in products like Apple Watch. The answer that can be given by the brand will be “cost”. The artificial leather alternative does not make much sense as it also contains “plastic”.
The second issue is that although the “designs” of iPhone models do not change drastically every year, the cases of the previous model cannot be used due to small size differences. It would not be wrong to say that this triggers a great waste.
