Apple is developing the M5 chip for the new iPad Pro models, which are expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026. According to a report by Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman, the M5 chip may make its first appearance with the iPad Pros.
Apple launched its new iPad Pro tablets with the M4 processor last October. Therefore, minor changes are expected in the next generation, which will be powered by the M5. The current iPad Pro design was introduced only six months ago, so a completely new design does not seem possible.
However, Apple’s move to the next-generation M5 silicon will provide a significant upgrade in performance and AI capabilities. According to rumors, the M5 chip will differ from previous Apple chips by switching to TSMC’s SoIC technology. SoIC packaging allows chips to be developed in a 3D structure instead of 2D.
This provides advantages such as better thermal management, lower power consumption, and improved electrical performance. It will allow the M5 to offer higher graphics processing speeds compared to previous chips. In addition, some claims have suggested that Apple could use TSMC’s 2nm architecture.
Gurman expects a launch in late 2025 or the first half of 2026. Accordingly, he thinks Apple will continue its 18-month refresh cycle after launching the M4 version in October.
