Google’s reCAPTCHA V2 verification system is one of the most common security tools that internet users encounter. You’ve probably used it many times on your own, choosing bicycles, buses, or traffic lights. However, according to a new study, artificial intelligence can now pass this system with 100% success! Here are the details…
Artificial intelligence beats Google reCAPTCHA V2 with 100% success!
A group of researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology achieved this feat with an image recognition model called YOLO (You Only Look Once). Using the model trained with 14,000 traffic images, the researchers developed an artificial intelligence that successfully passed the visual verification tests in reCAPTCHA V2.
Although similar artificial intelligence studies have been conducted before, in this project, the recognition rate for objects such as motorcycles and fire hydrants reached 100%. As a result, we can now see that artificial intelligence can easily defeat verification systems such as reCAPTCHA.
Google’s reCAPTCHA V2 system was based on visual verification tests. It was later replaced by the more advanced reCAPTCHA V3. But millions of websites around the world still use reCAPTCHA V2. Therefore, the researchers’ discovery could be an important milestone for internet security.
The YOLO model used in the research is known for recognizing objects in real time. Moreover, the model can run even on low-equipped devices, making it even more impressive. The researchers also note that this AI takes extra precautions, such as preventing repeated logins from the same IP address.
In any case, these developments raise big questions about internet security. While it is debated how secure verification systems such as CAPTCHA will be in the future, artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly successful in overcoming such security barriers.
