Ubisoft’s highly anticipated new game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, aims to revolutionize the gaming world with its innovative weather simulation technology. Unlike previous titles in the series, this game will introduce a new system called ‘Atmos,’ designed to enhance visual quality and transform the gaming environment by fully simulating in-game weather conditions.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Breaking New Ground
In an interview with VG247, the game’s art director, Thierry Dansereau, emphasized the importance of the sky in the game. He stated, “The sky represents a crucial visual element that significantly contributes to perceived visual quality and player immersion,” noting that realistic cloud simulation will help create a dynamic, ever-changing world.
Technical lead Maxime Beaudoin explained how the Atmos technology works:
“In AC Shadows, all weather conditions are simulated. This means clouds are dynamic and evolve over time. Atmos manages not only the clouds in the sky but also weather phenomena such as precipitation, wind, ground moisture, and lightning.”
This new technology will have significant impacts on gameplay. For instance, stormy weather makes it harder for NPCs to detect the player due to noise and reduced visibility. This means players will need to consider weather conditions when planning their strategies. Conversely, clear weather makes it easier for enemies to spot the player.
Atmos also simplifies the work for developers. Beaudoin noted, “Artists no longer need to manually create and program clouds and various weather effects. By adjusting just a few parameters, an automated cloudscape emerges.” Ubisoft claims this feature will soon be a default in all their games.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on November 12 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Feel free to share your thoughts about the game in the comments!
