Blue Origin TeraWave to Challenge Starlink with 6 Tbps

Ana sayfa / News

Jeff Bezos’s space company, Blue Origin, has officially announced its new satellite internet network, Blue Origin TeraWave. Designed specifically for enterprise customers, this ambitious project aims to deliver staggering data transfer speeds of up to 6 Tbps, setting a new benchmark in the space-based internet industry and directly challenging existing services like SpaceX’s Starlink.

How Blue Origin TeraWave Plans to Redefine Connectivity

The TeraWave constellation is a massive undertaking that will combine two layers of satellite technology. The network will consist of 5,280 satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and an additional 128 satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO). This hybrid approach is designed to maximize both coverage and speed. Blue Origin plans to begin launching the first satellites for this massive network in late 2027, although a final completion date for the entire constellation has not yet been announced.

Furthermore, the technology behind these satellites is key to their performance. The LEO satellites will use radio frequency (RF) connections to achieve a maximum data transfer speed of 144 Gbps. However, the MEO satellites will utilize advanced optical link technology to reach the incredible headline speed of 6 Tbps. To put this into perspective, the current market leader, SpaceX Starlink, offers speeds up to 400 Mbps with plans to upgrade to 1 Gbps in the future.

Blue Origin officials state that TeraWave will add a space-based layer to existing infrastructure, providing high-speed connectivity to locations that are difficult to reach with traditional methods. This announcement also comes just a few months after another Bezos-owned company, Amazon, introduced its own consumer-focused satellite network, Project Kuiper (formerly referred to as Leo in the source), which will consist of around 3,000 satellites offering more standard broadband speeds.

Although the Amazon and Blue Origin networks are completely independent, these two initiatives together could create a much stronger competitive environment for SpaceX’s Starlink, which currently serves over 9 million customers. With the successful development of its New Glenn rocket and commercial payload agreements with NASA, Blue Origin is solidifying its position not just as a rocket company, but also as a significant satellite manufacturer and operator with the introduction of TeraWave.
