Bluesky may soon start offering a paid subscription service. The social network, born as a result of Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, has grown a lot since Musk started making many controversial changes to Twitter/X. As a result, the platform plans to please its users with an X Premium-like option. Here are the details…
How will Bluesky’s Premium subscription system work?
X (formerly Twitter) has proven that it can make a profit by offering a subscription service. Elon Musk somehow managed to insist that X users pay for a monthly or annual subscription. For a certain fee, X offers some privileged features that are not available to free users. In addition, the social network ensures that the posts of paying members are more visible.
Bluesky may not be as big as X yet. But it has been steadily gaining new users over the past three years. Recently, the platform has been gaining even more users, especially after X announced changes to its blocking system that will force users to see everyone’s posts, including posts they’ve previously blocked.
However, Bluesky announced this week that it is working on a subscription service, but it will be very different from what we saw on X. Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operating officer, said: ‘Subscription revenue helps us improve the app, grow the development ecosystem, and gives us time to explore business models beyond traditional advertising.’
Wang also added that Bluesky’s subscription service will be very different from X’s: ‘Paid subscribers will not receive special treatment anywhere in the app, such as increased visibility or verified badges next to their name.’
Instead, Bluesky’s subscription service will allow paying members to upload and watch high-quality videos and some profile customisation options.
What do you think about Bluesky’s paid subscription plans? Would you consider buying it?
