BMW, one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers, made an important Android announcement for the future today at CES 2023. BMW announced that it will start using the Android operating system, or specifically Android Automotive OS, in its vehicles in “2024”. This announcement, which took place at CES 2023, made a serious impact.

BMW won’t use Google apps when it transitions to Android Automotive

It is reported that BMW will bring Android to its vehicles with the OS 9 update and leave the Linux-based iDrive behind for new models after 2024. Android Automotive OS could make drivers very happy. Thanks to Android’s wide application support and advanced user experience, the software infrastructure of BMW vehicles could evolve in 2024. Interestingly, it is stated that BMW will not get help from Google in this process . The company will use open-source Android infrastructure. The company is allegedly planning a Play Store-free infrastructure for now and does not explain why.

It is also rumored that BMW will update iDrive 8 with an Android-themed iDrive 8.5. Of course, this will not be a first in terms of Android usage. There are many major automakers already using Android in their vehicles. Meanwhile, there are other developments on the Android and automobile side of the agenda. Google announced at CES 2023 that it is bringing high-resolution maps to Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 models with the Android operating system. In addition, the new Android Auto, which focuses on multi-window operation, has also started to roll out.

BMW had previously made noise with its software-oriented subscription infrastructure. The company has now started selling heated seat subscriptions for certain car models in some countries. For some time now, users have been required to purchase a subscription to use the seat heating that is already included in the purchased vehicle. The monthly fee for only the front seat is 18 dollars. It costs 180 dollars for an annual subscription and 415 dollars to permanently purchase the right to use the heating system.
