Unlike earlier setups that relied on mouth or throat movements, this brain-computer interface works even when the user doesn’t attempt to speak. That detail makes it far more accessible for individuals who have lost the ability to speak or move due to conditions like ALS or brainstem stroke.
How the interface works
The system uses implanted electrodes that monitor electrical activity in specific brain regions linked to speech planning. A machine learning model then decodes those patterns and translates them into text on a screen.
Researchers tested the tech on volunteer participants who silently repeated phrases in their minds. Over time, the model learned to identify those phrases based solely on brain activity.
