Activision is open-sourcing Caldera, one of the largest and most complex maps in Call of Duty: Warzone. The nearly complete geometry of the Caldera map is now available on GitHub, making the dataset available to a wide audience, from game developers to academics.

Activision has taken a big step forward by open-sourcing a massive dataset compiled from Call of Duty: Warzone’s Caldera map. This 4 GB dataset contains over five million meshes, 28 million primitives and over a billion point samples. The dataset can also represent scene metadata, volumes used for lighting operations, and in-game character paths. The Caldera map is no longer available in Warzone, but it stands out as one of the largest and most complex maps in the history of the Call of Duty franchise.

With this open source initiative, Activision aims to contribute not only to the gaming industry, but also to academia and AI development. The company stated that this dataset will be a valuable resource in academic research, education and training AI models. Activision’s goal is to both support machine learning and accelerate the evolution of game development processes with this dataset.

Disney Pixar’s chief technology officer said that this dataset is an important milestone for the industry and will pave the way for groundbreaking research in environmental geometries and scene construction. Activision’s initiative enables new discoveries in 3D rendering and simulation, enriching the creative process.

Michael Vance, software engineer at Activision, said that the innovations from the release of this dataset could give content teams more freedom and flexibility to find the most compelling scenarios for players.
