OpenAI has taken a significant step into the education sector, announcing a free version of ChatGPT for teachers. This special version, called “ChatGPT for Teachers,” offers users unlimited messaging with GPT-5.1 Auto and will be available until June 2027.
ChatGPT for Teachers Announced
The company designed this version specifically for secure use in K-12 schools. ChatGPT for Teachers is currently only available in the United States.
Based on the fact that students frequently complete their homework through ChatGPT, the company now allows teachers to actively use AI in classroom material preparation and educational processes. The new version allows teachers to experiment with AI and create course materials tailored to their own needs.
Like the consumer version, ChatGPT for Teachers includes integration with other applications, file uploading, visual creation, and storage features. However, the most significant difference of this version is its compliance with FERPA, which aims to protect the privacy of student education records.
In this special edition, teachers can share their conversations with colleagues, and the system enriches new conversations with suggestions based on how other teachers are using ChatGPT. Prior to this special edition for teachers, OpenAI has taken steps to encourage students to use AI models more effectively.
For example, ChatGPT Edu allows institutions to offer access to ChatGPT just like an email account. Furthermore, Study Mode, available in all ChatGPT editions, supports student learning by focusing on step-by-step explanations of answers.
