Apple’s artificial intelligence platform, Apple Intelligence, is being rolled out in China on a limited basis. According to a new Bloomberg report, the service is expected to reach Chinese users with iOS 26.1 or iOS 26.2 updates by the end of 2025. Apple views this AI feature as a critical step for the success of the iPhone 17 series in particular.
China Censors Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence requires approval from local regulators to operate in China. Due to regulations in the country, foreign companies typically work with a local partner. Reports indicate that Apple has partnered with Baidu and Alibaba for this purpose. The approval process is reportedly lengthy and complex, and US officials are also concerned about this situation.
Apple Intelligence’s operations in China are split into two. Baidu will provide the platform’s features, such as Visual Intelligence, and fulfill the role of ChatGPT in the US. Alibaba will ensure the platform operates in compliance with the Chinese government’s requirements and restrict content.
Apple is currently testing Apple Intelligence with its employees in China. Users with Apple accounts registered in China cannot access this feature, even if they purchase their devices from abroad. The company released a simplified Chinese version of Apple Intelligence in April 2024, available only to users outside of China.
This situation once again demonstrates the severity of restrictions on AI in the Chinese market. What are your thoughts on this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
