Chinese scientists have found a new method of protection against radiation
The research team identified that blocking a protein called Sting (Stimulator of Interferon Genes) could significantly reduce radiation-induced damage. In experiments, mice with this protein disabled showed a survival rate increase from 11% to 67%.
Additionally, the cell death in the intestinal tissue of irradiated mice decreased from 45% to 12%, and the intestinal villus density increased by 2.3 times. This discovery is so important that it is said it could reduce the side effects that cancer patients experience during radiotherapy. While radiotherapy targets tumors, it can also damage surrounding healthy tissues. The new treatment method could make healthy cells more resistant to radiation damage, offering a solution to this problem.
