Details about CD Projekt Red’s long-awaited The Witcher 4 are starting to become clearer. It has been announced that Ciri, who became a powerful figure of the story in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will take place on a more ‘humane’ level in the new game of the series. The first details suggest that Ciri’s control over time and space will be severely limited or completely eliminated.
What will Ciri’s new balance of power look like?
Speaking to GamesRadar, CD Projekt Red executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga detailed how the decision to restrict Ciri’s abilities was made. ‘We thought a lot about how to bridge the gap between Ciri being overpowered at the end of The Witcher 3 and the skill set we’re showing in the new game,’ Mitręga said, noting that this is one of the most important elements shaping the game’s original story.
Ciri’s power to manipulate time and space in The Witcher 3 was something that players admired both in terms of story and gameplay dynamics.
However, Sebastian Kalemba, the game’s director, stated that reconstructing this balance of power was a critical necessity for the story: ‘When we design the story of The Witcher 4, we make sure everything has a clear answer. Why Ciri lacks these powers will be explained in some way in the game’s story,’ he said.
Why Ciri lost these abilities is currently a mystery, but theories include the weakening of her powers after the defeat of White Frost, a conscious choice to give up these abilities, or an enemy taking them away from her.
Reducing Ciri to a more balanced power level aims to provide a more challenging and satisfying experience for players. This decision also offers the opportunity to see Ciri as a full-fledged ‘witcher’. It seems that a more focused gameplay that combines magic and sword skills more harmoniously awaits us.
