An end to concrete in construction! They are building completely wooden structures.

While wood has been used as a building material since ancient times, it remains indispensable in the modern construction industry. Researchers at Michigan Technological University are preparing to revolutionize the production of Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), which could replace traditional concrete and steel in construction. Here are the details…

Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is being used in the construction of multi-story buildings

Cross-Laminated Timber is a highly durable building material made by combining layers of wood and resin. Typically made from softwoods like pine, spruce, and fir, CLT is now also being produced from hardwoods.

Researchers at Michigan Technological University have succeeded in producing this material from hardwoods such as maple, oak, and birch. This new method opens the door to constructing stronger and more durable buildings in the construction industry.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, buildings and the construction sector are responsible for 37% of pollution causing global warming. This poses a significant threat to our planet’s future. Cross-Laminated Timber made from hardwoods could significantly reduce the environmental impact by replacing carbon-intensive concrete and steel, marking an important step towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Cross-Laminated Timber made from hardwoods needs to receive approval from the North American Production Standard. Once approved, this material is expected to become widespread in the construction industry. If this happens within a few years, the market for wooden construction materials could see a significant boom.

Raju Pokharel, a professor of forest economics at Michigan State University, says, “When approval comes, it will be good for the economies of states with hardwood.” As demand increases, prices might rise slightly, but it will not significantly affect wood prices.

Researchers are also continuing to work on making concrete and steel less carbon-intensive. Methods such as capturing air pollution during the concrete production process and integrating it into the concrete or completely reorganizing the steel production process are being explored.

Wood has been used as a building material for centuries. However, when combined with modern construction technologies, it becomes a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative. Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is indeed an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
