AMD has identified vulnerabilities affecting some of its Ryzen processors. According to the company, the vulnerabilities could allow hackers to take control of the systems. The issues are related to the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) connection between AMD processors and motherboards.
AMD issues vulnerability warning for Ryzen processors
AMD worked with motherboard manufacturers to address security vulnerabilities. It has begun rolling out new firmware for many popular brands. However, not all motherboard BIOSes have yet been updated to include the fixes.
The vulnerabilities were first reported earlier this year. AMD has provided AMD Generic Encapsulated Software Architecture (AGESA) updates to address them. It is important to note that the SPI vulnerabilities do not affect all Ryzen processors.
However, many older models that have not received a BIOS update are still at risk. These include many AMD processors such as the 4000G and 5000G APU. On the motherboard side, there are 400 and 500 series models. It was reported that these models, which have not received BIOS updates until now, remain vulnerable.
AMD recommends users to check the manufacturers’ page to check which motherboard has received the BIOS update. Accordingly, users are advised to check and install BIOS updates.
While the details of the vulnerabilities were not disclosed in detail, it was noted that malicious actors could breach the security. This means that they can remotely run code on Ryzen computers and infiltrate the computer.
