The Last of Us Part I PC port disappointed fans. Released yesterday, it suffers from many bugs and performance issues. Steam reviews are mainly negative, highlighting frequent crashes and poor hardware utilization. Steam Deck users report over an hour to compile shaders, with performance issues continuing after that.
Personal Experience with Performance Issues
After experiencing these problems on my Steam Deck, I tried the standalone DLC Left Behind, only to face crashes during the opening cinematics. Adjusting the graphics settings to low helped, but I still encountered performance issues.
Naughty Dog released a hotfix patch addressing some stability issues shortly after the launch, promising more updates soon. After an hour of gameplay on Steam Deck, it seems improvements have been made, but the most graphically intense sequences have yet to be tested.
Sony’s last-minute provision of demo codes for the game raised concerns about its quality. Developer Naughty Dog quickly acknowledged the issues, tweeting they are “actively investigating multiple issues” reported by players. Their “known issues” page lists shader loading issues, memory leaks, outdated graphics drivers causing instability, and the game failing to boot on systems meeting minimum requirements.
Previous PC ports of high-profile PlayStation games, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection, also experienced issues at launch. Despite updates fixing these issues, it remains a disappointing trend.
The game’s release was delayed from its original March 3rd date, but it still wasn’t ready for launch. Sony likely aimed to capitalize on the HBO series’ popularity, which recently concluded its first season. Naughty Dog has not released an update for The Last of Us Part I yet, but fans hope they can resolve the issues for both Steam Deck and powerful gaming PCs.
