Discord, which has millions of users worldwide, has become the new target of censorship in Russia. Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media and internet regulator, announced that Discord was blocked for not removing content that violates domestic laws.

Discord has been blocked in Russia for failing to remove banned content. Roskomnadzor, Russia’s media and internet regulator, announced that Discord has been blocked inside the country.

Last week, Roskomnadzor demanded that the popular communication platform remove nearly 1,000 pieces of content deemed inappropriate under Russian law. However, the regulator said Discord had failed to comply with the request.

In this context, Roskomnadzor blocked Discord, adding it to the list of foreign internet platforms whose access has been restricted in Russia in recent months. Discord is particularly popular among gamers and social media communities, allowing users to have private conversations via text, voice and video.

The move is a result of Russia tightening its control over internet content following its invasion of Ukraine last year. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are among the platforms blocked for failing to remove banned material.

Russia has previously fined tech companies such as Google, Facebook and X for failing to remove content that did not comply with its laws. Discord is currently at risk of being completely blocked in the country. The company has not yet made a statement about the restriction imposed by Roskomnadzor.
