A lawsuit filed against Discord in California has raised a highly controversial feature of the popular Nitro subscription service. Users claim that they face an unnecessarily difficult process when they want to cancel their subscription. So, what kind of legal problem did this process put Discord in? Here are the details!
Is Discord trying not to get Nitro cancelled?
According to the lawsuit, the method Discord offers for subscription cancellation is neither fast nor user-friendly… Among the allegations, it is said that a prominent button or link for subscription cancellation is missing, making it deliberately difficult not to cancel. Users have to go to the ‘Subscriptions’ tab and find a small ‘Cancel’ button. However, the process is further complicated by the numerous warnings and persuasions that appear during the cancellation process.
California’s Business and Professions Code (Section 17602) requires that consumers be given the ability to quickly and easily cancel auto-renewal services. However, the lawsuit contains serious allegations that Discord violated this law.
The plaintiffs say that the complexity of the process is not only reflected in users’ complaints, but is also supported by numerous YouTube guides on the subject. Discord has not yet made an official statement on the matter.
California had previously imposed sanctions against large companies in similar cases. For example, platforms such as Nintendo and Sony had to make some adjustments to comply with state law. Now everyone is wondering how Discord will respond to this case.
So, what do you think about this? Is the subscription cancellation process really difficult? Don’t forget to share your opinions in the comments!
