Discord just leveled up. The popular chat app is now more than a place for gamers to talk—it’s a marketplace, quest board, and reward system rolled into one. Today, Discord officially launched its new in-app currency called Orbs, introducing Quests and advertising features to monetize engagement like never before.
Users can earn Orbs by completing brand-sponsored Quests, ranging from trying a game to engaging with partner content. In return, they receive Orbs, which can be used to unlock digital rewards, Nitro subscriptions, and possibly much more in the future.
This isn’t just cosmetic. Discord confirmed that these new features are part of a major monetization strategy. The company wants to reward users for time spent—and give brands a new way to connect with communities.
Developers and advertisers can now sponsor Quests inside servers. These Quests might ask users to play a demo, follow a creator, or visit a website. Every completed task adds Orbs to a user’s balance, encouraging engagement and deeper interactions.
Discord users spotted early tests of Quests last year, but today’s rollout makes it official. The platform is now rolling out Quests across multiple servers, beginning with the United States. More regions will follow throughout the summer.
“We’re creating fun, rewarding ways to explore games and content on Discord,” said Peter Sellis, Discord’s Senior VP of Product. “With Orbs and Quests, users can engage meaningfully, and brands get real value.”
But not everyone is happy about Discord Orbs
Some users express concern that Discord is drifting away from its original vision. Critics warn that turning chatrooms into ad-driven spaces might alienate core communities.
Still, Discord insists this system respects user privacy. The company claims it won’t allow hyper-targeted ads or invasive tracking. All engagement remains opt-in, and users can choose which Quests to pursue.
Meanwhile, brands like Epic Games and Ubisoft have already lined up to launch their own Quests. Discord’s integration of monetized tasks could reshape how gamers discover new titles and experiences.
Orbs represent more than a currency—they’re Discord’s attempt to rewrite the rules of digital engagement.
The new economy has launched. Whether users embrace it or push back remains to be seen.
